34 DAY 12

Heidi was awake first and stared at him for a while. And then woke him with some coffee. ‘Hello. See how I look after you? What else can I do?’

He smiled and dragged her towards him again. Later they emerged together and joined Clive at breakfast. They were already bracing themselves for Heidi’s return to Vienna. ‘I need to be there, Martin. All the experts and data are there if we want to look at the trafficking routes and any drug links.’

Martin accepted it and tried to make it easier for her. ‘Ring me whenever you want,’ and unhelpfully, ‘I’ll only be five hours away.’

She prodded him playfully in the ribs.

Heidi had phoned her mother for Max’s home address for Clive, and then she told her ‘Mama, I’ve just met the love of my life. I’ll tell you about him later,’ and hung up.

Meanwhile, Clive had a call from Jim to say that INTERPOL had forwarded Rudi’s home address to him and he would forward it now to Clive.

Clive passed Tereza’s letter to Heidi, for her to forward to her contacts in Bulgaria, and took Max’s address from her.

She had already asked her department to forward photographs of suspected local people traffickers in Sofia, to the hotel today for Clive, so that Marko could take them to Tereza for possible identification.

With some smiles and tears she said goodbye to Martin. ‘We’ll speak later, won’t we?’

After Heidi had left, Clive mentioned the issue of her grandfather to him, but she had already reassured Martin that whatever happened, it would not be allowed to compromise her involvement. Clive asked Martin what was happening with him and Heidi.

‘I’ve found the woman of my dreams and we’re both over the moon,’ Martin told him.

‘I’m so happy for you Martin. She’s a wonderful girl and you deserve her.’

‘You’ll find a wonderful girl like her one day, Clive.’

Maybe it was time for Clive to try again.

During the day, Clive contacted INTERPOL and thanked them for Marko’s involvement and for controlling the tracking device. They were ready to scale up their operation through the German police as soon as it became necessary.

* * *

So much had happened to Heidi over the past week that she needed to take stock and make sure she was coping properly. She did not want to suffocate Martin, but at the moment she was thinking about him nearly all the time. He was on an important mission and she did not want to jeopardise it by distracting him and becoming a burden. So, she phoned him when she was on the train back to Vienna.

‘Hello. I missed you.’

‘Sorry, who’s this?’

‘Stop it’ she giggled. ‘I have something seriously important to say to you.’

‘Please give me a clue.’

‘I want to talk to you all the time and to be with you, but I mustn’t distract you so much that you cannot do your job properly. And I don’t want to bore you. Please give me some advice, Martin.’

‘Just ring me every hour instead.
